We’re an independent Kwikset in Tacoma locksmith serving Pierce County, repairing and installing everything from builder-grade Tylo knobs to SmartKey deadbolts and Halo smart locks. Most Kwikset problems we see don’t actually require a new lock – they need a rekey, a strike adjustment, or a cylinder reset. That’s the difference between a locksmith who knows this brand’s failure modes and one who just swaps hardware. Kwikset is the most common residential lock brand in Tacoma, which means we work on it every single week. Call (855) 382-0943 for straight answers and an honest recommendation.
We’re not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Kwikset. What that means for you is simple: our advice is based on what fits your door and your security needs, not a brand program or a sales quota. When a Kwikset lock can be fixed for $40, we’ll tell you that. When it should be replaced, we’ll tell you that too.
Why Trust Lodestar Locksmith for Your Kwikset Locksmith?
Norm Eckley started Lodestar Locksmith after nearly two decades turning wrenches on residential and commercial hardware across Pierce County – much of it Kwikset. He grew up in Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood, where half the houses on his block had deadbolts that hadn’t worked right since the Carter administration. That stuck with him. These days, our crew sees hundreds of Kwikset locks a year across Tacoma’s older housing stock, and we’ve learned exactly how each generation of this brand fails and what actually fixes it, including Kwikset repair in Fircrest and nearby areas.
Our technicians carry genuine Kwikset replacement cylinders, SmartKey rekey kits, and latch and strike hardware on the truck. We don’t ask you to wait while we order parts for the most common repairs. We also know when a Kwikset lock is worth repairing versus when a $20 builder-grade knob should be replaced outright – and we’ll give you that answer honestly, not based on what earns us more. If you researched Kwikset before calling, you’ll find we speak the same language: series numbers, cylinder types, and real failure modes, not vague promises.

Common Kwikset Locksmith Problems We Fix in Tacoma
- SmartKey deadbolts that won’t rekey or accept the current key. The 240 and 260 series SmartKey cylinders use a wafer-based rekey mechanism. When a previous owner or landlord used the SmartKey tool incorrectly – or tried to rekey with a key from a different Kwikset series – a wafer gets mis-seated and the cylinder either seizes or stops recognizing any key. The fix is a cylinder reset with a fresh rekey kit, not a new lock. We see this constantly in Tacoma rentals near UPS and downtown where unit turnover happens every year.
- 660 and 780 series deadbolt latches that drag or won’t throw. Tacoma’s older homes settle. Door frames shift, strikes go out of alignment, and the bolt drags against the strike plate. Owners blame the lock when the real problem is the door or frame. We’ll adjust the strike, shim the hinges, or reposition the bolt throw – and only replace the deadbolt if the mechanism itself is actually worn out. In our experience across North End and Stadium District homes, more than half of “broken” 660/780 deadbolts just need frame work.
- Worn Tylo and Cove knob and lever assemblies. Builder-grade Kwikset Tylo knobs and Cove levers have internal spring cages that wear out. The knob gets wobbly, the rose plate loosens, and eventually the latch won’t retract when you turn it. By the time a knob is visibly loose, the spring cage has usually failed internally. These units are inexpensive to replace outright, and we’ll tell you honestly when a repair isn’t worth your money.
- Halo and Aura smart locks dropping off Wi-Fi or refusing new codes. Kwikset’s Halo bridge and Aura Bluetooth models are solid hardware with occasionally finicky connectivity. After a firmware update or app change, the lock can stop accepting new user codes or fall offline entirely. Usually the fix is a factory reset, a proper re-pair, and a firmware check – not a replacement. We also see worn keypad digits on frequently used codes, where one or two numbers stop registering. Keypad replacements solve that.
- One key that works the deadbolt but not the knob – or vice versa. Tacoma rentals and older homes often have mismatched Kwikset hardware where different cylinders were installed over the years. We rekey everything to a single key, inspect each cylinder for wear, and replace any that are too far gone to rekey cleanly. One key should work everything you own.
Kwikset Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
We stock genuine Kwikset cylinders, SmartKey rekey kits, latch assemblies, and strike hardware on our service vehicles, so most Tacoma jobs are completed in a single visit. When we need a part we don’t carry – a specific Halo keypad or an uncommon finish – we source it directly and schedule the follow-up before we leave.
We use quality aftermarket strikes and reinforcement plates only where they solve a real problem: a misaligned strike on a settling door, a security upgrade on a frame that needs a longer screw into the stud, not just the jamb. We won’t sell you a smart lock when a 660 or 780 deadbolt with a reinforced strike does the job. And we won’t repair a $20 Tylo knob when replacing it is faster, cheaper long-term, and you’ll get years more life. Call (855) 382-0943 and we’ll walk you through what we find and what we’d recommend – before any work happens.
Our Kwikset Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnosis. We listen to what the lock is doing – or not doing – then inspect the cylinder, the latch, and the door alignment. A Kwikset lock that “won’t turn” is often a strike problem; a SmartKey that “won’t rekey” is often a wafer issue. We identify the actual failure before touching anything.
- 2
Repair or installation. For SmartKey cylinder issues, we reset the mechanism with a fresh rekey kit. For deadbolt drag, we adjust or replace the strike and align the frame. For worn Tylo/Cove hardware, we either replace the spring cage or the unit – whichever makes sense. For Halo and Aura connectivity problems, we reset, re-pair, and verify firmware.
- 3
Testing. Every lock we service gets cycle-tested: key in, key out, bolt throw, knob retraction, smart lock code entry. We test with the original key, the new key, and check keypad digits individually. If it doesn’t work perfectly before we leave, we keep working on it.
- 4
Warranty and follow-up. Our workmanship is backed, and we explain exactly what’s covered before we start. If a part we installed fails under normal use, we come back. No fine print, no runaround.
Kwikset Products We Service & Install in Tacoma
Our crew works across the full Kwikset line that appears on Tacoma homes and rentals, including Kwikset repair in Fife: Tylo and Cove knob and lever sets, 660 and 780 single-cylinder deadbolts, SmartKey 240 and 260 series cylinders, and Halo and Aura smart locks. We rekey existing Kwikset hardware to new keys, install new deadbolts and knobs, set up smart locks with proper app pairing and user codes, and repair latches, strikes, and cylinders. The right fix the first time – because a second lockout call is one too many.
We Also Service These Brands
Kwikset isn’t the only lock brand on Tacoma doors. Schlage deadbolts and handlesets are common in newer construction and remodeled homes, and Medeco high-security cylinders show up on commercial properties, medical offices, and high-value residences. We work in all of these. One call covers the lock, the key, and the car.
FAQs – Kwikset Locksmith Service in Tacoma
No. We’re an independent locksmith that services and installs Kwikset products across Tacoma, but we’re not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Kwikset. That independence means our recommendations are based on what fits your door and your security needs, not a manufacturer program. We work on Kwikset because it’s the most common residential lock brand in our service area – and because we know its failure modes well enough to fix them right.
Yes. We stock genuine Kwikset replacement cylinders, SmartKey rekey kits, and latch and strike hardware on our trucks. For strikes and reinforcement plates, we sometimes use quality aftermarket options when they solve a specific alignment or security problem better than the OEM part. We’ll tell you what we’re installing and why before we install it. Call (855) 382-0943 for a free estimate.
Most single-lock Kwikset jobs – a rekey, a SmartKey reset, a deadbolt strike adjustment, a knob replacement – are done in 30 to 60 minutes. Smart lock installation or multi-lock rekeying across an entire house may take longer. We’ll give you a time estimate when you call based on what you describe, and we’ll confirm it once we inspect the lock in person. We work efficiently because we know this brand’s hardware well.
We service Tylo and Cove builder-grade knob and lever sets, 660 and 780 single-cylinder deadbolts, SmartKey 240 and 260 series cylinders, and Halo and Aura smart locks. If you’re not sure which series you have, describe the lock or send a photo – we’ll identify it and tell you what’s involved before we dispatch.
Kwikset warranties cover manufacturing defects in the hardware itself. Professional service from an independent locksmith – rekeying, strike adjustment, or installation – doesn’t void a valid manufacturer warranty. What can cause problems is an incorrect DIY rekey that damages the SmartKey wafer mechanism. If you’ve already attempted a rekey and the cylinder now feels gritty or won’t accept a key, we can usually reset it with a fresh rekey kit. Call (855) 382-0943 and describe what happened.
Kwikset rekeying in Tacoma typically runs $25 to $45 per cylinder depending on the series and condition. A SmartKey cylinder reset is similar. Deadbolt installation or replacement runs $75 to $180 including hardware, and smart lock installation (Halo or Aura) runs $100 to $200 depending on the door prep required. The full price is quoted on the phone before anyone is dispatched, and that’s the price on the invoice – no call-out surcharge added on arrival. Call (855) 382-0943 for an exact quote. Estimates are free.
Sometimes – but not always cleanly. Kwikset and Schlage use different keyways, which means one key physically cannot operate both brands’ cylinders. What we can do is key all your Kwikset hardware alike so one key works the Kwikset deadbolt and knobs, then either rekey the Schlage to a matching second key or replace the Schlage with a Kwikset-compatible cylinder if you want a single key for everything. We’ll walk you through both options and the cost of each before any work begins.
